All That Jazz

Founder and first violinist of Quartet San Francisco, classically trained Jeremy Cohen’s electrifying jazz performances have earned him nationwide accolades. PACO is proud to present the world premiere of Jeremy’s new jazz violin concerto, with Respighi’s lovely Ancient Airs and Dances and the dark, powerful Chamber Symphony based on Shostakovich’s famous String Quartet No. 8.

Saturday, December 19, 2009 – 8 pm
Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford University Map

Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra
Benjamin Simon, conductor
Sharon Wei, viola

Viola Virtuosa

Shy middle sister of the string quartet, the viola rarely gets her chance to shine… Enter acclaimed violist Sharon Wei performing Bruch’s gorgeous Romanze and Britten’s haunting Lachrymae, based on an Elizabethan song by John Dowland. Corelli’s popular Christmas Concerto begins our program; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 (“Little Russian”) with the combined forces of PACO and Sinfonia will close it.

Saturday, March 13, 2010 – 8 pm

Peter Lemberg, oboe

English Suite

PACO favorite Peter Lemberg returns with the oboe’s larger cousin, an instrument that is neither English nor a horn. Mozart’s beautiful Adagio is paired with Vincent Persichetti’s masterful Concerto for English Horn (1977), surrounded by two authentically English works: Handel’s Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 6 plus the delightful English Suite by Hubert Parry.

Made in the Americas

From the sunny shores of the Caribbean to the asphalt jungle of New York City, our musical journey travels through the Americas, south and north. Our program features virtuoso percussionist Chris Froh performing the sizzling marimba concerto by Brazlian composer Ney Rosauro, plus dances from Panama and Broadway. PACO will also be presenting the world premiere of our fifth annual Youth-for-Youth commission, a new work for string orchestra by Berkeley native Gabriel Smith.
