The Great Fugue

The Grosse Fuge was an almost-crazy experiment in dissonance and disruption by the by-now-completely-deaf Beethoven. Called “repellent” and “incomprehensible” by his peers, Stravinsky considered it “an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever.” Enjoy the “great fugue” while you watch the incredible visual representations of the score produced by Stephen Malinowski’s Music Animation Machine projected onto a screen above the orchestra. Rising young piano star Yoonie Han makes her PACO debut with a late, great Mozart concerto (#23, in A) and we prepare your ears for Beethoven with fugues by Mozart and Mendelssohn.

A special appearance from PACO’s SuperStrings Orchestra will also be featured. Music of Tchaikovsky and Handel, of course, plus holiday and pops favorites to ring in the new year.

The Genius of Youth

Felix Mendelssohn was 12 years old when he composed his tenth string symphony, a precocious blend of his two favorite composers, Bach and Mozart. Benjamin Britten was 21 when he wrote his dynamic (and difficult!) Simple Symphony, and Shostakovich was all of 27 for his brilliant, bitter first piano concerto, which features PACO concerto competition winner Annie Ku. We also welcome Antoine van Dongen to the podium; he was a violinist in Amsterdam’s famed Concertgebouw Orchestra for many years and here makes his PACO conducting debut.

Saturday, May 17, 2014 – 7:30 pmJory

Cubberley Theatre @ Cubberley Community Center
4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto

Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra
Benjamin Simon, conductor
Jory Fankuchen, violin

Across the Centuries

Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 1910 Fantasia was inspired by a 16th century melody written by his English compatriot Thomas Tallis. Ernest Bloch’s lifelong exploration of ancient Jewish themes and melodies finds an expressive outlet in his soulful Baal Shem. And Handel? We’re still inspired and charmed by his music 2.5 centuries later. Jory Fankuchen is a PACO favorite coach and teacher; he makes his solo debut on this concert.
