SuperStrings Orchestra Director/Conductor

SuperStrings, comprised of the youngest PACO students, introduces the basic elements of ensemble playing to young string players with limited orchestral experience but having had a few years of private study. Under the direction of Kris Yenney (PACO ’74), an emphasis is placed on creating a positive environment where the love of music and of playing together is fostered for a lifetime of enjoyment. As at all PACO levels, competitiveness is minimized in favor of cooperation, wherein each player is equally valuable to the whole. In addition to weekly rehearsals, each SuperStrings member is placed in a smaller chamber ensemble which practices under the supervision of a parent, a member of Senior PACO, or a local professional. SuperStrings’ two annual concerts feature works for the orchestra as well as performances by these chamber ensembles.

Kris Yenney, Director of the SuperStrings and Preparatory orchestras, is also currently Director of Orchestras at the Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley and of a community chamber choir, the M'EarthTones. An accomplished cellist, Kris began her studies in Palo Alto before going East to earn a BFA from SUNY Purchase and a M.M. from the New England Conservatory of Music. Inducted into "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities," Kris was also honored as the first woman to win the John W. Work Composers' competition for her original work, "Jabberwocky," both in 1985. Having joined the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra in 1967, Kris has been involved with the organization ever since, as active member, soloist, camp counselor, coach, guest soloist, workshop faculty and director. Many of her private cello students have joined the ranks of PACO over the years. Invited by William Whitson in 1999 to direct the SuperStrings, she took the helm of the Preparatory group in 2002 and also directs one of the three Bach Celebration Concerts each Spring.

Kris has performed in several professional chamber ensembles over the years. As cellist of the New England String Quartet, she participated in festivals and competitions worldwide and was Artist-in-Residence for UMass, Boston and Amherst. A founding member of the Left Coast Ensemble and of the Palo Alto Sunrise String Quartet, she currently performs and records extensively on the cello, viola da gamba and voice in the Celtic/Early Music quartet, Broceliande.
