The Orchestras
The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra (PACO) is an award-winning training orchestra for Bay Area string players of high-school age and younger. The emphasis on chamber music uniquely sets PACO apart from other youth orchestras in the Bay Area and lies at the core of our educational program. Five ensembles (PACO, Sinfonia, Debut Ensemble, Preparatory Orchestra, and SuperStrings) of approximately 25 members each rehearse weekly and perform throughout the year, presenting an extraordinary level of music-making and commitment to their art. We provide our members with frequent opportunities to perform chamber music, including a summer chamber music workshop that attracts faculty from across the country. Our community outreach programs bring smaller ensembles into venues around the Bay Area, providing access to our joyful brand of music-making to audiences young and old.
PACO was founded in 1966 by violinist, teacher and conductor William Whitson, who served as the orchestra’s music director for 36 years. Mr. Whitson established PACO as one of this nation’s premiere youth ensembles. Appointed music director in 2002, violist Benjamin Simon is bringing a fresh energy and exciting direction to PACO’s programs, while continuing the tradition of excellence in performance. There is more emphasis on important music of the 20th and 21st centuries, expanded community outreach, added opportunities for PACO musicians to perform as soloists, and a new commissioning program for young composers. Kris Yenney (PACO ’74) directs the SuperStrings and Preparatory Orchestras, creating a positive environment in which our youngest musicians develop their talents.
